Focus on Children’s Portraits and Siblings – Powell, OH Family Photography
I grow to appreciate and enjoy family photography even more every single time I am out with a family. I love how more families are going back to the practice of enlisting professional photographers to make their family portraits and then sharing and enjoying them by displaying the photographs in their homes. It seems like the proliferation of digital everything killed the family portrait in American homes for a while, but I feel like we’re coming back around! It may sound odd to be excited about this if your thought of a family portrait is something made 25 years ago by a grumpy department store photographer, but that’s not how things are done by most modern professionals today!
I had the opportunity to photograph my sister’s family in the Columbus area last fall (I know, I’m working on catching up with blogging a lot o my previous sessions!) and I had a blast. The kids were all awesome. They did such a fantastic job of sticking with things during our few brief times of family focus shooting, then they got to run around and have fun in their backyard before moving on to play at Highbanks in the Columbus Metro Parks system. We decided to stick around in the backyard for the beginning of the shoot, and I am so glad we did! We had awesome light, an open area to work, and the kids were incredibly comfortable. We made most of my favorite photographs during our first 30 minutes in the backyard.
This post will feature the kids and their photographs, then we’ll come back to revisit their family photos again in another post. The strong individual personalities that we see in our children are worth focusing on, even during a family session. I try to isolate the kids for their own portraits, then work on interactions between siblings. These photographs are some of my favorites, and I am so happy to (finally) share them with you!

Thank you so much! The morning light was awesome, but I also used an off camera softbox for a lot of their photos. I was trying to blend it as naturally as possible.

You did such a great job of capturing their cute little personalities! They look like they’re actually having fun (which is exactly what family pictures should be like). 🙂 Beautiful!
